New AP® African American Studies Resource Authored by Course Development Committee Member

WEST MILFORD, NJ — Sherpa Learning, a leading independent publisher of high-level Advanced Placement® (AP) resources, is proud to announce the release of its latest workbook, Critical Practice for AP African American Studies. This comprehensive skill-building resource is authored by Kamasi Hill, Ph.D., a veteran educator who served as a member of the official AP African American Studies development committee.

As schools nationwide implement this groundbreaking interdisciplinary course, teachers and students face the challenge of navigating new assessment designs. Critical Practice provides the targeted, exam-aligned practice essential for mastering the course's most rigorous components: the Document-Based Question (DBQ) and Short-Answer Question (SAQ).

"Launching a brand-new AP course is a massive undertaking for both teachers and students," said David Nazarian of Sherpa Learning. "By partnering with Dr. Hill, we are providing a roadmap that comes directly from the source, ensuring students practice with the exact level of rigor and complexity they will encounter on exam day".

Critical Practice for AP African American Studies includes:

  • 18 Full Document-Based Questions (DBQs): Extensive coverage of all four course units, with extra focus on heavily-weighted topics.
  • 12 Comprehensive Short-Answer Questions (SAQs): A mix of text-based, visual, and non-stimulus prompts with detailed scoring guidelines.
  • 100+ Meticulously Sourced Materials: Primary and secondary sources that mirror the sophistication of official AP Exam stimulus material.
  • Expert Strategy Guides: Step-by-step writing plans and tools for document analysis, such as HIPPO and SOAPSTONE.

About the Author: Kamasi Hill, Ph.D., is a dedicated historian and theologian with 30 years of teaching experience, including 16 years in the AP classroom. In addition to his role on the development committee that helped shape the course framework, Dr. Hill is an experienced AP Exam Reader and Advanced Placement Summer Institute (APSI) workshop leader.
